File Server - System Requirements / Recommendations (Remote Desktop / Thin Client Mode) (Last Updated 10/12/2020)
IMPORTANT NOTE: OneSource Version 5 will begin being rolled out to new and existing customers in 2020-2021. Depending on your companies size and volume you maybe be able to run OneSource from one of our 'shared' cloud servers or you may want to continue to run OneSource from your own on-premise server. If you are considering buying a new server you may want to contact us FIRST before buying a new server.
(*** Running OneSource on a Windows Server (in Terminal Server Mode) is what we recommend to all of our customers--large or small--due to the proven difference in Speed, Reliability, Lower Cost of Maintenance, and Accessibility ***) |
Type | Component | Recommended |
Hardware* | Processor | (For 2-5 Users) 1 six (6) or eight (8) Core Intel® Xeon® processor with hyper-threading (15M Cache or greater, 2.40 GHz or higher, 7.20 GT/s or faster). (Last updated in 2017) (For 6-10 Users) 2 six (6) or eight (8) Core Intel® Xeon® processor with hyper-threading (15M Cache or greater, 2.40 GHz or higher, 7.20 GT/s or faster). (Last updated in 2017) (For 11-20 Users) 2 eight (8) or ten (10) Core Intel® Xeon® processor with hyper-threading (20M Cache or greater, 2.40 GHz or higher, 8.00 GT/s or faster). (Last updated in 2017)
(Additional Notes: In general we recommend the Xeon E5 series of processors (or faster) with Turbo Boost and Hyper-Threading with Intel motherboards).
NOTE: If your company has 20 or more users we recommend that you consider setting up Hyper-V or VMWare on your server so you can create 2 or more 'virtual' servers (for MS SQL Server and RDP). In this case we recommend that you DOUBLE or TRIPLE the size or quantity of you processing power, RAM, and Hard Drive Space. (When creating virtual servers resources get used up quickly). (Click here to see a comparison of Intel server processors). (Click here to see a comparison of multiple high-end processors side by side). |
RAM | (OneSource will run with less RAM than the figures recommended below. But will run much faster with the figures recommended below)
Windows Server 2008 R2 (Standard Edition 64bit) - 16 GB RAM (1-5 users) running Remote Desktop Services Windows Server 2008 R2 (Enterprise Edition 64bit) - 32 GB RAM (6-15 users) running Remote Desktop Services Windows Server 2008 R2 (Enterprise Edition 64bit) - 32-64 GB RAM (16+ users) running Remote Desktop Services (Note: Consider 2 Servers for 16 or more users)
Windows Server 2012 R2 / 2016 R2 / 2019 (Standard Edition 64 Bit) - 32 GB RAM (1-5 users) running Remote Desktop Services Windows Server 2012 R2 / 2016 R2 / 2019 (Standard Edition 64 Bit) - 64 GB RAM (Up to 15 users) running Remote Desktop Services Windows Server 2012 R2 / 2016 R2 / 2019 (Standard Edition 64bit) - 128 GB RAM (16+ users) running Remote Desktop Services (Note: Consider running 2 'Virtual' Servers if you have 20 or more Remote Desktop users--1 for the App and 1 for SQL Server) |
Hard Drive | Two (2) or more Solid State Device (SSD) drives with Raid 0 or Raid 1 - 1+ Terabyte in size (for running the app and storing local backups.
NOTE: Since this configuration involves having all users having a 'desktop' on the server, it is recommended that the Operating System (O/S) partition be at least 500GB in size, and larger if possible. Another drive or partition can be made to run OneSource and store OneSource local backup files.
|
Hard Drive Space | 500GB+ on C Drive (or whichever drive your O/S reside on. (Note: It is very common for file servers to have the hard drive partitioned into a relatively small C drive for the Operating System and one or more larger drives for data, backups, etc. However, since ALL users will be logging into the server and will have their own desktop (which is typically space on the C drive) we STRONGLY RECOMMEND making the C drive as large as possible - 500GB or larger)
|
Video Card | Very good quality Video card (since users may likely have a 'desktop' session of their own on the server). The higher the resolution the better. (Depending on the server being selected the DELL SKU A4869234 might be a good option).
|
CD ROM | CD/DVD ROM or CD/DVD ROM Read/Write
|
Network Interface Card | 10/100/1000 Ethernet or higher (w/ 1Ghz Switch)
|
Backup Hardware | See Backup Software below.
|
Uniterruptable Power Supply (UPS) | 750 Watt or Higher
|
Software | Operating System +Windows CALs + Remote Desktop CALs | Windows Server® 2016 Standard Edition (R2) (64 bit) or Windows Server® 2016 Standard Edition (R2) (64 bit) or Windows Server® 2012 Standard Edition (R2) (64 bit)
+ one (1) Windows server Client Access License (CAL) for each user + one (1) Windows Remote Desktop (RDP) 'Open Business License' CAL for each user.
*** SPECIAL NOTICES *** All versions of Windows 'Small Business Server' are NOT SUPPORTED by OneSource at this time (because they don't allow for terminal services).
If you don't already have a Microsoft 'Open Business License' you can buy the software and set up an Open Business Account from numerous online technology and software resellers. Note: Sometimes it can be a challenge to know which online companies are legit (not selling fake, illegal or invalid pirated licenses). We (and other customer's of ours) have had a good experience buying from www.softwaremedia.com. |
Database | Companies with 14 or fewer users: MS Office Professional Plus* 2010 / 2013 / 2016 or 2019 "Open Business License". 1 license for the Admin user). We (and other customer's of ours) have had a good experience buying from www.softwaremedia.com. *Including the latest service packs, patches, and Windows Updates.
Companies with 15 or more users: You will need the MS Office Professional Plus (listed above) PLUS we recommend storing your data in MS SQL Server Standard Edition (1 Server License and 2 SQL Server User Licenses). (We recommend running this on a separate physical or virtual server)
